It may be a bit of a concrete bungle, but Space City has its charms.

The fourth-largest city in the US is a sprawling metropolis of highrises, malls and parking lots. Hot, humid and flat, Houston may not be Texas' prime destination, but it has a great museum district and NASA's Johnson Space Center, and Galveston beaches aren't far.

Oil and gas are still big business around here. Houston dominates southeast Texas thanks to a near manic commitment to growth, unfettered by zoning restrictions. The interesting bits are concentrated within a few miles of downtown; a 30 to 45 minute drive south on I-45 brings you to coastal attractions.

Subtropical and humid, with loads of sun and only about 1270mm (50in) of rain a year. The vicious summers are made more intolerable by the lack of a breeze. When the wind does come you'll know about it; Houston is no stranger to tropical storms and hurricanes. Winters are cool and temperate.

For heaven's sakes, don't visit in August. Locals argue that it's the heat not the humidity that's the problem, but who cares? The steam off the concrete is stifling. Average daytime temperatures swelter around 94°F (34°C). June to November is hurricane season along the coast, adding the possibility of tropical rain. Humidity is highest in October, when it can be a deranging 93% at the crack of dawn. Late February to early April is definitely the time to come. You can catch the rodeo, admire the bluebonnets, and enjoy the lower heat and humidity.

A Top Day in Houston

Houston is a sprawling city.. it will take more than a day to cover Houston and for that very face you will need a car...

With no car stay in the Galleria are of the city and enjoy the shops.. huge Shopping Malls like the Galleria with its ice rink in the centre !.. visit Memorial Park, the Willams Water Wall, Museum of Fine Art.

The one special thing about Houston is NASA.. NASA is located to the south of the city about 40mins.. here you can visit the Rocket Park for free.. and see Saturn V up close and personal.  For a fee you can visit inside the centre and do a fantastic tour which takes in the Space Shuttle payload mock up, see the moon rock exhibtion and even the old mission control room  - it really is worth the money and a visit.

Keep on going south and you can visit Clearwater and ultimately the coast at Galveston. All in all a great city to visit !
