A little dancing on the sand will put the jingle back in your tambourine.

Be warned: Rio's powers of seduction can leave you with a bad case of saudade (indescribable longing) when you leave. Planted between lush, forest-covered mountains and breathtaking beaches, the Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City) has many charms, most notably the Cariocas , its exuberant residents.

The international tourist crowd takes advantage of Rio's ritzy side - there are innumerable opportunities to be decadent. But Rio also has much to offer the budget traveller: there are cheap hotels and restaurants aplenty, and the beach is a free entertainment zone.

Weather

Rio has a typical tropical climate, so expect some rain and humidity. Summer (December to March) is hot, with temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to a scorching 40°C (104°F). It can also be dreadfully muggy; there are more showers in summer than at other times, but they rarely last long. Winter temperatures range from around 20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F), with plenty of good beach days.

A Top Day in Rio de Janerio

A blend of historic buildings and young skyscrapers, the center of Rio is an excellent place to discover the city's charm away from its beaches and mountains. Among the hustle and bustle, you'll find museums, bars, theaters and open-air bazaars. This tour is best done during the week, when Centro is at its most vibrant (and safest).

Start at the Praça Floriano, which is the heart of modern Rio. It really comes to life at lunchtime and after work. The neoclassical Teatro Municipal, overlooking the plaza, is one of Rio's finest buildings. On the east side of Av Rio Branco, facing Praça Floriano, there's an open-air music market, Rua Pedro Lessa. Next to it is the Centro Cultural Justiça Federal, which often hosts exhibitions. The solid Biblioteca Nacional is next door, while north on Av Rio Branco is the historic Museu Nacional de Belas Artes.

At the end of the block you'll pass the Cinema Iris, once one of Rio's most elegant theaters, before emerging into busy Praça Tiradentes. Soak up some of the stately ambience here.

On opposite sides of the square are the Teatro João Caetano and the Teatro Carlos Gomez, historic buildings that still stage some excellent performances. Around the corner is the Centro Cultural Carioca.
